Description
The module will systematically explain the requirements and systems for managing occupational safety and health. The specific requirements of OHSAS 18001 will be detailed from initial status review to policy, planning, implementation, monitoring, auditing and review. Participants will be required to apply theorectical principles in addressing managment system issues in a simulated or real work environment.

Indicative Syllabus
History and development of OSH management systems

Detailed discussion of all the elements of an OSH management system; policy, planning, implementation, operation, performance measurement, checking and corrective action, management review

Legislation Register, Risk Registers,

Objectives setting, OSH KPIs, performance standards

Defining roles and assigning responsibilities

Auditing as an element in checking


Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. Discuss the clauses and the various outputs required to achieve compliance with the elements of OHSAS 18001.

  2. Develop the outputs to meet the compliance requirements of the planning clauses of OHSAS 18001 in a workbased scenario using a project management approach.

  3. Recognise OSH performance indicators for the measurement and managment of OSH.

  4. Demonstrate a knowledge of best practice in OSH to meet the elements of the clauses

  5. Discuss the factors to be considered when planning and conducting an audit with a focus on the requirements for internal auditing under OHSAS 18001.
