Description
This subject aims to build on the years of previous language studies and to equip the student with the linguistic skills to communicate competently in the target language and to develop the student's understanding of and sensitivity to social, cultural and economic issues relevant to the countries of the target languages. It also aims to develop the student's capacity to carry out personal research in the target language.

Indicative Syllabus
Listening:

Can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar. Can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes. Can understand a lot of film dialogue if in standard dialect.

Reading:

Can read articles & reports concerned with contemporary prolems in which writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints. Can understand contemporary literary prose.

Spoken interaction:

Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible. Can take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining my views.

Spoken production:

Can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to my field of interest. Can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Writing:

Can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to my interests/field of specialisation. Can write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. Can write letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. The student will perform confidently at Level B2 within the Common European Framework for Language Learning (Council of Europe Guidelines) and those who have spent a semester/year abroad in the country where the target language is spoken will be working towards Level C1

  2. understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in his/her field of specialisation

  3. interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity (higher in those who have lived in a country in which the target language is spoken) which makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party

  4. produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issues giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options

  5. understand and appreciate various historical, political and social issues relevant to the main country in which the target language is spoken and start to acquire an awareness of other countries across the globe where the target language is spoken

  6. self-correct when speaking/writing in the target language
