Description
This subject aims to develop the learner's general people management skills in a variety of professional people management contexts. The module aims to develop the skills required of graduate managers in effectively managing people in professional settings; this may be in the context of engaging professionally with staff and/or clients. The learner will appraise current theory and practice in managing people, specifically in the areas of personal self awareness and interviewing skills. Learners will develop the capacity to evaluate professional situations and to identify and engage in appropriate strategies to manage people effectively.

Indicative Syllabus
1. The professional manager as a leader of people.

2. The role of emotional intelligence and self awareness in effective people management.

2. Personal skills of self awareness and personal development planning

3. Interviewing theory, techniques and skills

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. Critically evaluate the current theory and practice in relation to effective people management skills

  2. Analyse the role of people management skills in successful organisations.

  3. Formulate creative and effective strategies and solutions with regard to people management issues.

  4. Critically assess one's own people management skills and identify strategies to improve and develop them.

  5. Develop and effectively conduct a 20 minute interview in relation to a business related scenario


Assessment Strategies
The assessment for this module will be continuous. Assessments will incorporate both the development of appropriate strategies, based on an understanding of best practice, and the application of these strategies through an assessment of skills in role play excercises as appropriate.
