Description
This module will provide a brief overview of the issues involved in the design and construction of sustainable built environments including site analysis, the behaviour of heat, light, sound and air circulation, human health and comfort , product selection and planetary impacts. It also provides a simple exploration of the properties, nature and environmental impacts of a variety of materials of which buildings are made.

Indicative Syllabus
Environmental Building Design-

Introduce the impact that the built environment has on the sustainability of our planet and its inhabitants providing a brief overview of the issues involved in the design and construction of sustainable built environments from product selection to planetary impacts.

Indicative syllabus.
  • Climate change as an important context for sustainable development.
  • Basic terminologies relating to heat, light, sound and energy.
  • Site analysis: principles, process and terminologies relating to sun, light, wind, sound and the orientation of buildings.
  • Climate, orientation, form, envelope and the admission of daylight and solar radiation
  • Comfortable and healthy places to live and work: considering issues of light, temperature, indoor air quality and psychological aspects of buildings that affect health.


  • Material Technology-

    An exploration of the basic properties, nature, environmental impacts and typical usage of a variety of materials used in modern construction and interiors including:
  • An overview of a range of materials, including (metals, ceramics, polymers, natural materials, composite materials) used in the exterior and interior of typical modern buildings which looks at mechanical, physical, thermal, optical, decorative, environmental, cultural, and economic properties.
  • Sustainability in the specification of materials.
  • A creative exploration of the assembly of a selection of materials which relate a design studio project.

  • Learning Outcomes
    On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
    1. Elucidate the theories, concepts and context of sustainable building design and the principle of how, why and where buildings and their services consume energy.

    2. Rationalise the main principles of designing for human health, comfort and well-being as they relate to heat, light & sound

    3. Conduct a basic environmental site analysis.

    4. Explain basic structural terminology and definitions, basic mechanisms of structural elements and the basic concepts behind the design of simple structural elements and structural systems.

    5. Describe the variety, properties and typical usage of typical materials and finishes used in traditional and modern construction.
