Description
This module addresses the social, organisational, ethical, environmental and legal contexts within which information systems are developed and used. It examines how technologies evolve and how emerging technologies can be aligned with business and organisational needs. It also looks at the ethical, legal and governance requirements raised by the introduction of new technologies within organisations.

Indicative Syllabus
1. Appraising emerging technologies: overview of technological innovation,
  • Data, information, knowledge- technology and decision making
  • IT /Digital strategic planning: formulation and methods
  • Aligning IT with business/organisational strategic objectives.
  • Horizon-scanning - identifying and appraising emerging technologies.
  • Analysing the broader context: innovation systems, identifying potential issues (ethical, legal, environmental, security).
  • Justifying investment: Constructing a business case and IT valuation methodologies.
  • The success and failure of IT projects : how to avoid failure through effective management.


2. Legal and ethical context and requirements of these
  • Legal and ethical context for the use of IT systems, and how these apply to emerging technologies, including codes of professional ethics, laws.
  • Minimising environmental costs of information technologies e.g. via purchasing policies, recycling and energy management.
  • Security and business continuity planning
  • Policies and procedures e.g. acceptable use, security, purchasing, recycling
  • IT goverance frameworks and standards (e.g. ISO, COBIT, ITIL,CMMI)- means of ensuring compliance.
  • Agile approaches to IT Governance.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. Analyse and assess the benefits and costs of emerging IT solutions, including the identification of broader social, environmental and ethical implications.

  2. Identify and assess means of addressing technical and management challenges emerging from the regulatory context within which information systems are used, including security challenges.

  3. Identify and evaluate emerging technologies in the context of organisational strategies.


Assessment Strategies
The students will be assessed through a research essay examining an emerging development in IT from a range of perspectives, and a final examination.
